The Art of Tailoring: A Guide to Customizing Your Perfect Sofa

The Art of Tailoring: A Guide to Customizing Your Perfect Sofa

When you walk into a standard furniture store, what you see is exactly what you get. You are forced to compromise on a layout that might not fit your living room, a fabric that doesn't quite match your accent chairs, or a cushion firmness that doesn't fit your comfort level.

At Briers, we believe your home should adapt to your lifestyle, not the other way around.

By partnering with local manufacturers like Stylus, we give you the freedom to co-design your furniture. Whether you are furnishing a cozy condo in Kitsilano or a spacious home near Marine Drive, customizing your sofa allows you to choose exactly how it sits, looks, and feels.

Here is a straightforward guide on how to design your dream sofa using our professional customization options.

1. Choose Your Seating Comfort: Standard vs. Feathersoft

The internal support of your sofa dictates how you relax. Depending on how you use your living space, you can customize the core of your seat cushions:

  • Firm Seat Foam (No Charge Upgrade): If you prefer a structured sit, need extra back support, or love a clean, crisp aesthetic where the cushions bounce right back, you can upgrade to our high-resiliency firm foam at absolutely no extra cost.
  • Optional Feathersoft Seating: For those who want the ultimate "sink-in" cloud-like comfort, selected styles can be upgraded to premium Feathersoft cushions.

Inside the Feathersoft Upgrade: > These luxurious cushions are engineered for both comfort and longevity. They feature a high-density foam core (2.0 lbs) with beveled edges to maintain the cushion's clean shape. This core is wrapped in a blend of 50% small waterfowl feathers and 50% resilient polyester fibre. To prevent feathers from poking through or shifting, the entire cushion is sealed in a high-density, 200 thread count percale cover with built-in sewn baffles.

2. Elevate the Tailoring: Edges, Borders, and Style

Once you have locked in your comfort, you can modify the visual tailoring aspects to match your specific interior design aesthetic. Small details can transform a mid-century modern sofa into a traditional piece, or vice versa:

  • Piping Options: You can choose to add crisp piping along the seams for a traditional look, remove it entirely for a minimalist and sleek ultra-modern profile, or select contrast piping to make the architectural lines of your sofa pop.
  • Cushion Dynamics: Want a unique look? You can opt for two-toned cushions (using a different fabric for the seats, backs, or toss cushions) or add decorative fringe.
  • Structural Details: You can choose between attached or loose back cushions, change the back cushion style entirely, or decide whether to add or remove fabric skirts.

3. The Ultimate Freedom: Customer’s Own Material (C.O.M.)

While we offer an extensive in-house local fabric library, we know that sometimes you find the absolute perfect textile elsewhere. Perhaps you working with a local interior designer, or you found an exclusive pattern that completely speaks to your personality.

With our Customer's Own Material (C.O.M.) program, you can bring your own upholstery fabric straight to our factory. Our master cutters will evaluate the textile—ensuring we calculate the precise yardage required based on whether the fabric pattern is Railroaded (cut horizontally along the roll) or runs Up the Roll (cut vertically)—to ensure a flawless, pattern-matched finish.
